Great Recorder
This recorder is about as good as it gets when it comes to dictating. The recorder is easy to use, has great clarity and, unlike other recorders I have recently purchased (and either threw out or returned broken), it actually operates as it should. I am pleased that one is still able to purchase a quality mini cassette recorder in this world of digital recorders.

New recorder was defective and old batteries leaking in packaging suggest a very old new product
Product does not work. Batteries that came with it were old and leaking in packaging. Installed new batteries and recorder would not run, record, forward or rewind, spindle does not turn with or without tap

great for the price
It's compact, has auto-shut off, and has decent sound quality. I couldn't ask more since it was less expensive than others that didn't have auto-shut off, an important feature since you can otherwise be dictating for minutes before you realize you've reached the end of the tape.

Okay for basic use.
This is my first small recorder so I don't have a basis for comparison. I bought it to record my own brief observations as I walk through and survey the development where I live. It's adequate for that but the sound is not as clear as I had hoped it would be and there is quite a bit of background noise (not from the environment). I question whether it would be adequate to record a lecture or music but for the price and my purpose it's okay.

Sony hand held dictaphone
I ordered this product for my dad who is dictating details about his life growing up (he's 80) and it has worked wonderful. It is very easy to use, inexpensive and more than worth the money. I would buy this product again.

going digital
Sony is known for quality and if you're looking for the simplest voice recorder, this is it. But if you're looking for a voice recorder with more to offer, go with Sony's digital. I returned my original order for the Sony digital voice recorder which offers many nice options the former does not have and am perfectly satisfied.
