Great read
It was quite emotional for me. Sometimes sad, sometimes angry. I think these foster homes and children’s homes need to be supervised regularly without giving notice. These kids are being victimized repeatedly. This book should have turned into a movie.

Tissues, please.
My 7th grade daughter wanted me to read this assigned book with her for class class. What a tender, witty, raw, and beautifully crafted book. We laughed. We cried. We paused. We reflected. We prayed. We cried some more. This book makes me look forward to supporting Orphanages, being a Foster Parent or adopting an older child one day. Books like this one are meant to be read aloud!

Sad that he died before part 2
A wonderful book. I grew up living in and out of children homes and foster homes so can relate to much of what he felt. I am very saddened that he passed before the 2nd book came out and have not heard whether his family has any intention of publishing what he did write. From my understanding he had scrapped it and just recently started all over just before his death. The book will have you run thru a gambit of emotion but in the end you will be glad you read it.For those that read other comments that reference the author's memory and detail for it having happened at such a young age; I can tell you from experience that you recall instances of abuse in very vivid detail, it burns into your memory. The same applies to the few good memories, when life is very hard you grasp onto the good memories in hopes of keeping your sanity and the ability to recall that not ALL of life is horrible and that just maybe good times will happen again. It's all part of self-preservation. The bad stuff you wish you could forget but it is forever branded into your mind. The good stuff you hold onto w/ a death-grip for hope. For those complaining about his lack of creative writing skills, remember the author had very poor education in the homes. He never claims to be doing anything other than telling his life story.

Not a fav, but still a good read!
This was a very sad and heart warming story about a small child and his struggles going in and out of foster care, and living with his dysfunctional family as he grows up.I felt that the book was a rather good read, there were several parts that were heart wrenching and heart warming. However by the end of the book it feels like the events just kept repeating themselves. It was like the same events just kept happening over and over with only minor changes in each incident. I also felt that the end of the book happened too fast and was kept open with no closure at all.I still would recommened this book for people to read, but unfortanitly it just wasn't one of my favorites.

Great story
I had to read this book in middle school and it is the first book I couldn't put down once I began reading. First book I read in one sitting. Tells a great story and is written well. I only wish the author had written more than just this one book. I recommend this book to anyone, even if your not big on reading. I promise you will enjoy this book.I purchased a used book and expected more wear and tear. I received a book in almost new condition and very quick. I also give 5 stars to the sender and would purchase from them again.

The most heart-wrenching book I've ever read
I have read dozens of books written by Holocaust survivors, and they can be very hard to get through. But I read so many of those, because they are amazing testaments of the human spirit's ability to endure...to hope. This book isn't exactly that. He endures, but mostly because of necessity, not necessarily thinking things will get better. But what he endured...there were times I was crying so hard I could barely continue. This little boy - this book makes you want to somehow go back in time and save him. And the things he did to make it to the next day - how did people not notice or care about these kids!?! It's unfathomable that these things happened, truly. At the end of the book, you know he grew up and didn't have to go through those things anymore, but you also realize there are thousands of children out there, right now - in real time, going through very similar situations that he did, and if you don't feel helpless and angry by the time you're done reading, there truly is something very wrong with your heart. This book was written simply, which added to the endearment of this little boy who found himself alone - over and over again. I just cannot recommend this book enough.

Nostalgia
I had originally read this book when I was a kid back in 1984 when this story was brand new. I loved it then and so I decided to reread it...and I'm so glad I did. This is the best book about orphanages that I've ever read in my entire life!!

Emotions
I read this book probably about close 20 years ago, and it hit me in all the feels. I cried, I laughed, I got mad, my heart broke, It is extremely sad, but I'm so happy where he ended up. It's sad to realize that young kids endure things like this and even worse in this world.
