not wat i expected
to start it off i have to say this game isn't anything i thought it would be, it is better i mainly preordered the game because i heard it came with a 20 dollar gift card so if it sucked, i wouldnt have lost much; BUT it turned out to be a great game. i can say for a fact that i hate gta4, despite its high reviews it wasnt that kind of game for me, but this game isnt just gta4 with horsies, it is fun, good looking, great sotry, and multiplayer was better than i expected about the game: graphics: just wonderful; enough said fun: the shooting machanics are nice and fun and the assist aim doesnt super assist so u still to have fun and the guns and dead eye mode and great as well voice acting: it is perfect, im ocd, so wen words r completely off from the lips i can't concentrate well, but rockstar really pulled it off multiplayer: well im rating it on day one and not many ppl are online atm, but it is great already, the free room is truly epic; i basicaly ran around the whole time with m possie and we killed animals, gangs, townspeople, and each other. when you reach certain parts of the map in multi free roam, objectives pop up and they r super fun, they can be hard by urselves but, if u have a possie it is fun to chat and organize and take down npc gangs. now tdm is also in this game, and it is just like any old tdm in a thirdps, but the opening is epic, u start the match off with a mexican stand off and it sets the tone for the game, overall in the first day this game has shine in multiplayer and i cant wait to have more ppl online to play with wat really shocked me was the length of the game, holy **** it is long, it isn't rpg long but it is longer than a normal shooter. i mean comeon 20-40 hours of gameplay for 60 dollars (40 if u preorder and got the 20 dollar gift card =]) with a great multiplayer that will last another 2 months =]; in the game there are so many side quest and things to do u get sidetracked and they are so fun it doesn't even matter. i think if u go thru it is about 20 and with all the extra stuff it is 40. so overall the wow factor really made me like this game. everything about the graphics, gameplay, multi, and story wows me; nothing like wat i expected my only bad comment is that u can;t change controls, and the game forces u to use r2 and l2 for trigger and aim, which isnt bad, but can be bothersome for those use to use l1 and r1, but i admit it is fun using those triggers now and it makes me went to buy those ps3 real r2 and l trigger so my advice, buy this game if u like a shooter with length, story, graphics, the only hate u can have is that u hate horsies and western stuff

Rockstar has a new winner!
Right off the bat, this game is a blast. The single player game has a decent storyline and it is fun to play. They do a good job of easing you into all the skills you will need later on in the game and make it fun. One of the things I enjoy doing a lot that I didn't think I would is hunting. In some areas you can hunt there are animals that can kill you, packs of wolves, Bears, cougars and panthers oh my! Having to keep an eye and an ear out for those animals keeps you from getting complacent in many areas. The Deadeye thing is done very well in my opinion. You slowly ramp up from just slowing things down to being able to mark several targets and then shooting them all. Makes you feel like a badass when you take out 6 bad guys with 6 bullets. Of course if you run out of deadeye when a panther , bear or cougar is coming for you or in the middle of a lot of people shooting at you , it can go very badly for you. Unfortunately Deadeye doesn't really work in Multiplayer which isn't really suprising. (There is a limited form of it when fighting npc's only but not really worth using) There are lots of little minigames in the game as well, you can play poker, liars dice, blackjack, 5 finger fillet, arm wrestling, horseshoes, and I am sure I am leaving some out. The detail in this game is amazing, I don't just mean the graphics either, things like you can identify animals that are nearby by the sounds they make even if you can't see them yet. All kinds of little details that they put in that really up the immersion level. The graphics are amazing, considering how old the xbox platform is I am amazed at the graphics they get into some of these games, although the limited memory does show up in the fact that you see a lot of people who look alike etc... but it is not anything that detracts from the game experience. Multiplayer is fun, you can create a posse (think team), and go after NPC gang hideouts or you can fight other posses or you can play capture the flag type games (you use bags of money instead of a flag). One thing I really would have liked to have seen is the ability to do the single player game cooperatively , there is a coop mission pack coming out but it is not there yet and I don't think you will be able to do the single player game in coop mode. I could go on and on about all the little things you can do (going after bounties, lassoing them from your horse and then hogtying them and racing back to the dropoff for them) The bottom line is this game is very well done and more importantly it is a lot of fun to play. Most of us have seen our share of games with great graphics that are not fun to play. This is not one of those games. I highly recommend this game, even if you have a strict gaming budget.

The Next Great Western Epic
I must admit that I didn't think very much of this idea, on paper, when I first heard about it. When I actually got to play the game, though, I was truly blown away. The cinematography is outstanding, cut-scenes are done perfectly with incredible voice acting. Combine that with a classical interpretation of the old west in a beautifully rendered environment that begs to be explored. As I wandered around between missions and tasks to do- I found myself just sitting on my horse, staring out at the world, panning the camera to frame a perfect sunset, followed by making camp and returning into town. (I also discovered that if the controller is left alone for roughly a full minute- the game switches to a first-person panorama shot, that will go on, in real time until you resume playing). What really stole the show, for me, however, is the story in this game. I've always enjoyed the stories in Rockstar's games, but I have never really been invested in their stories before. So-called 'story missions' are usually things to get out of the way to progress and bring new tools and new environments- a few of them standing out in memory by game's end. The stories are what, I believe, make Rockstar's games truly Mature games, intended for adults- because adults are the only ones expected to understand and comprehend the emotions, complexities and themes. In Red Dead Redemption, you play as John Marston; a man with a past. Ordinarily, this is nothing novel when it comes to video game stories. Here, though, there is no back story to read or one, long piece of back-story that gets everything out of the way. Instead, the entire history and character of John Marston is something that the player learns and understands through playing the entire game, itself. A very common story mechanic for Rockstar when it comes to their stories- here it's done perfectly. Everything you learn about his past, his old life running with a gang of bandits, down to his family and other missing pieces is told through well-written, believable dialog delivered by some amazing voice actors. The basic story structure when the game begins, is quite simple. John Marston was a criminal- an outlaw; he used to be part of a gang of bandits, though federal agents have taken his family and given him a mission to complete before he can see his family again. The mission is simple, hunt down his former brothers-in-arms, particularly a man named Bill Williamson and his family goes free. To accomplish this seemingly simple task, John will word with and meet a colorful cast of truly interesting characters- work with lawmen, help a snake oil charlatan, help a ranch in trouble and even lead him to Mexico to take part in a revolution. More than this, I dare not say about the story. Play the game for yourself, you will not be disappointed. Gameplay at first might seem a little clunky and taking some used to. For instance, moving the left control stick moves the player, as expected, though at a slow walking pace. To run faster, the player must hold down the A/X button (x360/ps3 respectively) and rapidly tap it to sprint. At first it can seem cumbersome, but adaption is fairly quick. This same issue can be said for riding horses. I grew up watching westerns, both new and classic. Though I can honestly recommend this to anyone who likes great stories, brilliant characters and intuitive gameplay. Red Dead Redemption is a one of those rare games that really exemplifies how the gaming medium can deliver an experience unlike any other form of entertainment. A game to play and really cherish.

Good game in a great package
This is an open world game set in the early 1900s as industry and "civilization" begin to push at the borders of the "wild west". The "old" west certainly is the right setting for this open world game environment, which is quite large. Your character, John Marston, is a reformed outlaw who cannot escape his bloody past. Pretty standard western fare, but the freedom in the game makes it feel pretty authentic. You can follow the main story mission by going to locations on your map that correspond to the other characters in the game. These "acts" are varied and fun. They give you a good sense of the characters, their motivations and you begin to get a better sense of Mr. Marston as you play through them. I really liked the story and the way that the game segued from one location to another. You might ride along with a posse and banter with a deputy who you do not have a high opinion of or ride shotgun on a stagecoach and talk about local politics. There is no dialog for you to direct. John Marston says what he says, but listening in helps you feel what the character is going through. I especially liked the songs (with lyrics) as I rode into a new important part of the game, made me feel a little like Clint in a spaghetti western. Of course, there is a lot of violence and you will probably kill hundreds of men, women and animals when all is said and done. You are free to roam about and you will come across indigenous life and local folks that need assistance either in the form of your help or your money/life. You can take bounties and hunt down criminals and take them dead or alive. Their requisite gangs will usually requiring killing. Gunfighting is a little bothersome at first, but once you get the hang of it you can disarm enemies, shoot their hat off or just pump lead into their head. You will ride horses, herd cattle and lasso animals and people alike and much of it is entirely up to you. There is also a time-slowing feature that you can use at any time (if you have your meter filled) to allow you to take out groups of bad guys (or lawmen) in authentic western gunman fashion. My only complaint is that my old eyes could not always see my enemies from a distance, but the "auto-aim" feature helps. Also beware of wolves (in packs), cougars (in pairs) and bears (in herds?). The bears were the worst. I would find one and shoot it and as I approached 3 more would attack me. It happened too often not to become annoying. I also hated the Gatling gun, but that's probably just my poor eyesight and reflexes. The game is fun and not too difficult to play. You can get many hours (my first run through was about 47 hours) and you will enjoy the story and the ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and have started to play through it again. If you like open world adventure or just a good western yarn, you have come to the right place.

An Extraordinary Effort
I wanted to emphasize a point that at least one other reviewer made -- given the period setting for this game, it seems so much more realistic than GTA IV ever did. Given the relative lack of law enforcement and the transient nature of the West, the "anything goes" kind of feel is there at level of saleability that I haven't seen in another game. I have to compliment R* for the depth of the experience and characters in the game. While there are the expected scripted missions, all kinds of stuff just happens out of nowhere, and you are forced to make very quick judgments about what you should do. If you see a guy being chased down by two others shooting at him, do you intervene? You know none of the background, so who is on the good side? Who on the bad? Do you just watch it play out and do nothing? There are real in-game consequences to your decisions, as measured by the honor and fame needles, and your "wanted" level. The number and diversity of the random situations you are confronted with are truly remarkable. R* also did an excellent job of making the West alive with animals and diverse geography. The hunting aspect of the game is really fun and adds to the experience. I got killed once by a hog that seemed to have the dexterity of Lazarovich, but that was probably just me since I haven't played too far into the game. The level of detail in the game is also very impressive. I was near a tree and shot an animal, and the report caused several birds I couldn't see to take flight from the tree. I rode over a dead guy and my horse left bloody horseshoe prints. And then there's all the stuff you would expect but are still amazed by -- the detail in the towns, shops, etc. and the way the horses ride and carriages feel to drive. There are some things R* could have done better, and I'll close with those. I hesitate to call them "cons" because in a game so rich, I have to ask myself what more I am truly allowed to expect. Regardless, here they are: (1) graphics could have been better in some instances -- some popping textures and inconsistent frame rates, but at the same time I am amazed that the game can keep up at all given how quickly scenery can change when your galloping along on your horse and changing direction; (2) the weapon wheel can be a bit clumsy; (3) some visuals could be sharper -- not sure why the game is not 1080p, but perhaps that would have required additional disc space that wasn't available given how expansive the game is; and (4) I agree with an earlier poster that it's a bit weird for the lead character not to be able to swim. It could have been fun to try a fight in the water with knives or something, save people from drowning (or not), do some log rolling, etc. All in all, I consider RDR an achievement in gaming. The genre has so much appeal to kids, I would thing R* would do well to have a scaled-down "E" or "T" version that focused just on hunting, treasure, and gathering quests. My kids would love it. They are clamoring to play/watch RDR, but there is just so much inappropriate content for kids in the game that, regrettably, there's no way to parse out any activities in the game for them. If they made an "E" or "T" version, they could sell several million additional copies, IMO.

As games get more complex, so reviewing them does too.
Caught in the wave of how amazing I thought the ending was in this game, it would be easy for me to give this game five stars. However, taking a couple steps back I remember the things that really had me taking breaks in between starting and finishing this game. So let's get it out of the way, the bad first: The story. Really I can't point to a game and say well there is a game that handled it really well, because games with concise storytelling are pretty short, and games with a lot of gameplay have overcomplicated plots and many useless missions. This game suffers from the latter. In my mind, a good game should blend getting into the mind of a character with cutting through the BS of pointless filler missions, so you can understand the motives behind why you're doing something without spending hours watching cutscenes (Metal Gear Solid 4). In Red Dead Redemption at least, the story is fairly clear. You are former outlaw John Marston, sent by the government to track down three criminals you used to run with, and if you don't, the "government" will make sure you never see your wife and son again. The first real problem I had with this scenario is that the gamer is expected to care about saving the lives of a family you don't see. Without spoiling anything, it would have been nice to see the family interaction at the BEGINNING of the game, so we know what it is we're murdering all these people for. Really the only other complaint I can make is about the NPC's in the game world. They are, most definitely, Rockstar NPC's. And by that I mean they are very quirky and eccentric. I have never really understood this, but after a while of hanging out with cocaine addicts, deputies who are dumb as a brick, and a revolutionary out to bed every woman in a thousand miles, you will yearn for some normalcy to latch on to. The writing is quite good in the game, as in the previous Grand Theft Auto IV, so I would think they can write interesting characters without resorting to making them the extreme ends of the spectrum. So what we are left with is a very good sandbox third person shooting game. Minor annoyances such as having to ride horses long distances to reach objectives or complete missions can get tedious, but this game makes it worth it. Most other games suffer from what I like to call, um, stupidness (Mass Effect 2). Where we meet characters, and witness their death and it is supposed to provide some sort of emotional attachment. And it lacks it for whatever reason. Bad writing (Avatar), bad acting (Avatar), or poor storytelling (See also: Avatar). However, this game does this very well. People whose lives you care about are put in the crosshairs, and you HOPE you are given the chance to save them, because they matter to you. That's one of the most important parts of any storytelling medium, because if the audience can't connect with something, they aren't going to like it very much (Avatar). The weapons system is also a plus for me in this game. I haven't read any other reviews, but I imagine one of the things being complained about is the ability to carry every single weapon you possess at the same time. I'm of the have your cake and eat it too school of thinking (Mass Effect 1), where you can stockpile your weapons and carry as many as you want. It is much simpler (if not realistic), and you don't have to do something annoying like going back to a safehouse just to change your weapon scheme. It was something I didn't expect and was very pleasantly surprised at. The weapons are also varied. As you progress you are given, or given the opportunity to purchase a diverse array of firepower. I could go on and on, but others have and will continue to do so. Games are and always have been overpriced, so if you want to wait for the price to drop, by all means, go for it. But if you are looking for a very good game to occupy about thirty hours of your life, then do not go without playing through this game at least once. The emotions are real, the voice acting is quite good (mostly), and even if there are some character cliches and overt messages in the game (a la western expansionism and the mistreatment of the "savage" Native Americans [Avatar]), Red Dead Redemption does a hell of a lot right. And unlike many other stories (Avatar), if you are looking for a happy ending, look elsewhere. Rockstar has started setting the bar high in regards to realism in their story telling and this one is no exception. Use the Mauser at the end. When you get there, you'll know why. You've never wanted to put 16 bullets into one person more.

A deep, immersive experience
This is going to sound a bit 'cheesy' but the character development and plot in this game is so incredibly well-done that by the end of the game, you actually care about the characters and what happens! Combine this with an immersive environment and expansive gameplay, you have one of the most entertaining games that has come out in a long, long time! Single-player will easily lat you 25-35 hours depending on how many side missions you accept. Multi-player is so-so but adds to the overall value of this great title! Even if you are not a fan of the Western theme, do NOT miss out on this exceptional game! EDIT 6-24-2010 Here is some info on the latest free COOP misson pack available for download from the PS Store. There are 6 missions in call; unfortunately you cannot choose which one you want to play; it loads randomly, which kinda sucks. Ammunition - The Mexican Army has the town of Tesero Azul under siege. You and your comrades are pinned down, caught under heavy artillery fire and enemy reinforcements. Your first goal is to clear the town of all hostiles while avoiding enemy artillery blasts from the ridge. Once completed, the next phase of the mission shifts to clearing out the Eastern and Western fortifications surrounding the town. These areas are rife with snipers, riflemen, and gunners on mounted Gatling guns. Once the flanks are secured the final phase of the mission begins, prompting one of your team members to grab explosives from inside the town and plant them on the high ridge amidst the opposing artillery encampment. The mission concludes once the camp is secure and the explosives detonated. Walton's Gold - Walton's gang has taken control of a small mining camp rich with gold. Fight through the camp while avoiding sniper fire from the ridge and mounted Gatling guns near the entrance to the mine. Once inside, pile as many bags of gold as you can into a mine cart while fighting off waves of Walton's cronies. Be quick, the mine is rigged to explode! Once safely outside the mine, defend your newly acquired riches from Walton's reinforcements. The Escape Interrupt an arms deal and steal a coach full of gold, with the option of using a second, Gatling gun-equipped wagon for protection. Turn the gold in to the American Army and clear out remaining resistance in the town of Tumbleweed. The battle at Tumbleweed involves cannons and Gatling guns. After a classic double-cross that ends in a stand-off, escape with the Gold Coach to Mexico, battling Army soldiers the entire way. The Herd Cattle rustlers have taken control of Box Canyon. Fight your way in and wipe out the rustlers, then use teamwork to protect the herd as you lead them home to Armadillo under heavy fire - watch for snipers on the ridge, and reinforcements on horseback. The Kidnapped Girl Another gang has taken over Fort Mercer, and they're holding a farmer's daughter hostage. Charge the fort and eliminate the gang's inner stronghold, then fend off reinforcements as you transport the girl by stagecoach to her home at Ridgewood Farm. The River Use a raft to head downriver, taking out rebel encampments along the way until you reach the rebel stronghold of Nosalida and a final epic battle for the town's massive weapons caches. Watch out for Gatling gun-equipped enemy rafts.
